love stretched across the continent

just got back to hollywood after a visit to ny/nj....it's so strange how many miles lay between this land and that and in a matter of hours on a plane....bam you're there again

six years in the west village gave me friends from all over the world that i still have strong bonds with since leaving ny in 2000.
that year seemed to bring on a mass exodus of sorts, so many people were leaving due to the rents going thru the roof
i became disenchanted in my love affair with this city
times square sold to disney, no dancing signs in bars

sometimes i wake up in hollywood and am startled that i don't live in ny anymore....as i'm sure many of you transplants do

but i do love it here...strange atmosphere yet somehow more in touch with nature....enjoying the natural structures in my field of sight as opposed to always being man made

any thoughts?

    in l.a.? hahaha...
actually l.a. is always accused of being such a concrete jungle!

it's funny, i'm an l.a. person who fell madly in lust w/nyc. i was so sold on the idea i was gonna move there this year--until i went to spain 1/1/2005.

the rents are RIDICULOUS in nyc, and i'm actually thinking it's more financially feasible for me to move overseas...

yes rents are ridiculous in manhattan.....more affordable in the burroughs like brooklyn, jersey etc
i say, if you've never lived there you should do it....it will change how you look at and interact with human beings forever

i lived in ireland and amsterdam for two years.....overseas is amazing too but hardly easier to move to than nyc....especially because it's difficult to find work when you don't have EU citizenship.....unless of course you're a kick ass dj

"kick-ass" isn't what i usually call myself, but yeah, there's work to be found... i think the easy availability of work and the relatively low rents (less than what i'm paying in l.a.) make it real appealing.

i dj and make music professionally, so i can live anywhere that the rents are manageable, and there are bars/clubs and an easily accessible airport.

back to the topic of the tribe:

i'd hoped to live in bk, thinking it would be cheaper and i actually liked being a little away from the city (quieter?) but the prices were still quite steep, and people were telling me to look at manhattan again...

Obviously I'm not an expert on this, but I could give you some assistance/advice on finding a place in Brooklyn. I'd imagine that you have a relatively high tolerance for what you consider an ok neighborhood, which means that you can probably find some good deals.

Heheh ... its good to hear a New Yorker say they find living in LA to be a good change from NY ... so many people here just assume that there is nothing redeeming about LA without having ever visited.

I totally agree with you, that despite all of its congestion and hype, living in LA is somehow a very relaxing and natural thing.

I do find myself getting a lot from living here ... though it is annoying to deal with people's clique-ishness on occasion, there is definitely a lot to be learned about humanity here.

I hadn't really thought of this before, but it seems like both LA and NY require one to "surrender" or "resign" oneself to all the bad things (either car culture & fake people or weather & the loss of personal space, etc.) to really understand and find peace in the place. Once you do, whole new worlds open up to you.

it's funny for me, i've grown up in l.a., and i've always been a bit of an oddity--didn't drive till i was in my 30s, didn't own a car until about 2 years ago, and i keep falling in love with places w/o car cultures (nyc & spain/barcelona.) i deal with the "fake people" issue in a different way than most, maybe. there's so many "real" people that i know that the fake ones get passed over for anything other than biz or superficial relationships. i LOVE the frankness of ny'ers though--that's my favorite stereotypical attribute of them. i love driving in l.a., i just hate HAVING to drive in l.a.
