So, here's something I'd like to hear from you guys on ...
What are the biggest adjustments one has to make when moving from LA to NY? How about when one moves from NY to LA?
And I'm not talking about just obvious things like "you have to buy/sell a car." I guess I'm interested more in social differences, such as how people meet, interact, and network. Or, maybe what type of expenditures are really different (but again, not necessarily obvious).
One thing that has really caught me by surprise is just how focused NY night life is on drinking at bars. I've really had to reign in my spending on booze at bars since moving here.
Or another thing ... what NY beaches will the typical SoCal person find most appealing? Or, what LA neighborhoods will feel homiest to a New Yorker?

Tue, August 3, 2004 - 9:56 PMnyc has beaches? :P
the drinking thing doesn't surprise me so much. if you think about the fact that most nyc places are tiny compared to l.a. apts, it makes sense--you don't invite people over, you meet somewhere, most likely a bar.

Re: Adjusting
Sat, February 12, 2005 - 12:37 AMmy move to la was via 2 years in amsterdam.....but lived in nyc for 6 years prior
i left my social/nightlife when i left new york.
first of all taking cabs everywhere and not having to drive is a huge issue....my house mate from brooklyn got a dui his second month out here
the whole meeting people is a huge contrast to nyc, but i guess that is another obvious one
i was in the west village on carmine street and absolutely loved my hood...now i'm in beachwood canyon in hollywood and dig this hood too....i actually feel like i live in the country! since i'm on a dead end right by griffith park i actually get deer out my bedroom window grazing on ivy
i miss the energy and buzz of the ny streets that just pulls you out of your house
here it's a project to go anywhere, but more chance for outdoor parties and hikes in canyons with my dog -

you mean in l.a.? you're taking cabs everywhere? are you $$loaded$$?? that's a really good way to go broke... actually, you're in a good neighborhood for walking or biking (but look out for all the idiot drivers!) there's 101 cafe for late-night eats, the franklin stretch (borgeous pig, bird's, etc), and you're not far away from club central in hollywood (hollywood bl. between vine & la brea.)
<my house mate from brooklyn got a dui his second month out here>
repeat after me "backstreets, backstreets..." they are pretty serious around here about that sort of thing. i recommend trying to either leave the club before 1.30 or AFTER 2.30--the cops are LOOKING for folks during that hour.
<the whole meeting people is a huge contrast to nyc, but i guess that is another obvious one >
nope, it's not--explain, please. are you talking about meeting people to date or friends? and please detail the differences your mean. -

Re: Adjusting
Sun, February 13, 2005 - 2:47 PMsorry for my vagueness-
i don't take taxi's here in la- done that once or twice- was referencing the nyc mode
will take your advice on the backstreets.....even though when i am the DD i tend not to over indulge
the whole meeting people thang is different here...maybe i just don't get out enough, my first year and a half here i was with an athelete boyfriend who lived an athelete's lifestyle-in bed by 9:30 and up by 6.....which kept me pretty isolated -my fault
now that i am a free agent and travelled to burning man this past summer i have met a community of people that i have been always searching for......very nice indeed (contradicting my earlier comment)
but i would like to comment on throwing parties here as opposed to nyc
it's much easier to rally a huge crowd there by calling out the short address of say, 48 carmine street by bleeker....everybody knows and can subway it there
here i've put together some parties, but had addresses with at least 4 or 5 numbers, directions to deal with, parking etc......more obstacles to make the party super fly
well lets just say as a new yorker, social life here is more of a challenge, but not horrible-i'm just learning the ropes
what has you wanting to leave so cal? -

ah. thanks for clearing that up. usually, i take the train when i'm in nyc--unless i need to get somewhere quick.
<will take your advice on the backstreets.....even though when i am the DD i tend not to over indulge >
nice to know you're responsible. :) the other advantage of backstreets is you don't deal with as many f'ed up drivers (there's fewer cars) so you're less likely to get in an accident w/someone who WASN'T responsible about their drinking.

ok, so you're just talking about people to hang with. actually, if you'd been in a place like venice, there's more of a day culture there--lots of cafes and places to hang w/the locals. l.a. can be so situational in terms of where you are/go.
<but i would like to comment on throwing parties here as opposed to nyc

everyone knows the cross-streets, you remember the number so you know which door to knock on. one of the things that threw me about addies in manhattan is that the number doesn't give you ANY idea of where it is.
<here i've put together some parties, but had addresses with at least 4 or 5 numbers, directions to deal with, parking etc......more obstacles to make the party super fly>
the addresses are longer, but they give you an indication of where something is. ex: 800 s. la brea is at 8th st. south of beverly (wilshire subs for 7th so it's a block south of wilshire.) 1650 n. schrader is just south of hollywood bl.--1750 n. schrader would be a block up on the other side of hollywood bl.
directions? haven't these people heard of MAPQUEST?? and for the web-challenged, there's always the thomas guide. they should really give those out at the airport... :)
parking is a hassle--no argument there.
<well lets just say as a new yorker, social life here is more of a challenge, but not horrible-i'm just learning the ropes>
just a completely different culture. you'll get it, though--the good folk do. :)
<what has you wanting to leave so cal?>
needing a change after 37 years. i love driving, i hate HAVING to drive. i'm tired of feeling like i'm bucking against the flow by being nocturnal, but NOT a druggie. i want to experience more of the world, and the people in it. i'm tired of being in a place that seems so far away from every other place (except oc and sd, but don't get me started on THOSE places...) -

Tue, February 22, 2005 - 6:33 AMKnowing you, I think you would really thrive in Europe. You should seriously consider giving it a try! Though, if you do decide to move to Brooklyn, I wouldn't complain =)
