Hi... A transplanted NYer here, new to this tribe. 88th and Bwy for 8+ years, now in Toluca Lake...

Can anyone recommend me a good restaurant here in LA (notice how I didn't even try and shoot for "great" har har) for gazpacho?

Thanks!

    i think Cobras & Matadors on Hwd Bl might have decent gazpacho... also try the Spanich Kitchen on La Cienega. i know they're not exactly in your area, but.... also, try peeking into a Zagat. i know there are some pretty decent Spanish joints around town. i went to one a couple yrs back but i can't remember the name to save my life. it's on San Vicente, i'm pretty sure....

    *sigh*... i miss LA... i moved to NY after having lived out there for 8 yrs. enjoy!

          i've been looking at that place--is it good?
          there's a cobras on beverly that's supposed to be head & shoulders above the one in los feliz (hollywood bl.)

          i don't rememer seeing gazpacho on the menu when i was at cobra & matadors. then again, i'm not a fan of gazpacho--so my memory may not mean anything.

          there's great food here--i was just shocked that you wound up in toluca lake--that's a real comedown (culturally/activity-wise) from the upper west side...

              <we liked the food just fine. >

              better than cobras? <--honest question. i looked at that place and thought "hmm..."

              <fideo paella>

              i think you mean fideua.

                actually, it *was* paella with fideo. that was what they called it at that joint. i'm sure others have their choice of names for it.

                honestly, i thought that cobras was a bit... i don't know. it was good, but i didn't think that it was so incredibly great. i think that they might be doing well for themselves because (in addition to "ok" food) of the fact that there are hardly any tapas joints in LA. this is not to say that La Paella is worlds better. although, i think that their stuff was better than cobras & matadors when we ate there.

                  can't argue about what the restaurant called it, but the spanish call it fideua:

                  possibly like benito's "rolled tacos" vs. "taquitos"--avoiding confusion?

                  so where should one go? maybe cobras is better than when you were here--maybe not. they're certainly not authentic (but that's not really the point of that place) but my buddy who eats a lot of tapas in the bay area was pretty impressed.

                    they're also called "flautas."

                    tomato, tomahto.... :)

                    i was at cobras last May/June-ish. i don't know maybe they've changed chefs. who knows. i say go try La Paella, tell them they need to change the name of that dish on their menu (ie: get with the programa, senores), and let us know what you think of their food.

                    Or, you could go to "N" (it should have a tilde, but i can't do it on my keyboard) in NYC. they have yummy tapas and their white sangria is YUMMMMM.

                    OR, you could just go to Spain.

                      in this town, ANYTHING is possible.

                      been looking at that place anyway. glad the food at least wasn't bad.

                      the only downside for my buddy about cobras was the sangria--he had it first and it almost ruined the meal for him. does n (+~) have boquerones? i'm not sure if that is available over here (u.s.)

                      <OR, you could just go to Spain.>

                      been there. loved it. going back. probably moving. but i have to say the tapas there aren't "gussied up" like cobras. mostly pretty simple stuff, just good--and MUCH cheaper.

                        how cute! they take siesta! LOL!

                        <Mon-Fri 11:30am-2:30pm, 5:30pm-10pm Sat 5:30pm-10pm>

                        they should really be open later, say 11 or 12 on fri/sat.

                        btw, if you ever go to barcelona, i have a GREAT place for you in barceloneta by the beach. it's already busy, so pm me for the name.

                        they have boquerones. i had them, and they were good. of course since no one else was going to have <gasp> anchovies, i had it all to myself. YAY!

                        Ed's going to Spain late August for a conference. you should send him your recommendations.
