I want to drive your stuff from LA to NJ /NY !

What I'm looking for is anyone who wants to transport a car or furniture or whatever from here to the east coast, who'd like to cover the costs and have someone reliable (me) drive the stuff out along with a few things of my own. ( leaving in Oct )

I'm not bringing much... a few bags of clothes, some computer gear and some music gear... maybe a box of art-in-progress... anyway, it's not much stuff, but too much to fly or ship.

I may do the couch-surf thing (I've heard recently of couch-surfer.com) and I'm betting that there's maybe even a website for people looking for this kind of situation. can be for a person or group or company, whatever. Maybe even a band or a circus that wants cool photos and animated photography of their tour !! haha, that sounds fun !

know anyone ? know a website or other resource ?

cheers,
Pete

NY Mexican Restaurants

Ok, so we need to get a thread going on good Mexican restaurants here in New York.

And I'm not talking about no chic "nueva Mexicana" Manhattan bistros that charge $12 for guacamole made at your table. The cheaper the better. Give me "hole in the wall" places, taco stands, and roach coaches. In my experience these are usually more authentic. Also, list general areas where one can find good Mexican food.

Here are a few places I've found:

- Sunset Park, Brooklyn
(5th Ave. & 46th St.)
There are 2-4 blocks of very affordable places with Mexican, Ecuadoran, and other central/south american cuisines.

- Jackson Heights, Queens
(74th St.-Bway / Jackson Heights Roosevelt Ave. stops)
There are tons along Roosevelt Ave. east of this train stop.

- Astoria, Queens
(Broadway NW stop, & 31st St.)
Small place on Broadway, just west of 31st St., next to a large second hand store.

- Park Slope, Broklyn
(5th Ave. & about 12th st.)
Place has a restaurant w/ a bar attached to it,
Green, white & red sign. Good salsa, cheap, serves beer.

Can anyone recommend me a good restaurant here in LA (notice how I didn't even try and shoot for "great" har har) for gazpacho?

Ok, so this is something that would be more common in LA, so I thought it was appropriate for this tribe.

Shari and I were at La Guardia last thursday waiting for our flight to Puerto Rico (via Atlanta), and were sitting at our gate eating some breakfast.

Shari walks away for a bit, and I find myself staring at the man sitting behind her. He was kinda hunched over, wearing glasses, and somewhat "bundled up". I swear, I almost said to him "has anyone ever told you that you look like Spike Lee?" But I thought to myself, nah, this guy looks to old to be Spike Lee, and I should just leave the dude alone. Shari comes back, and at about the same time some guy at the counter walks over and starts talking to the man about basketball. We then realize that it _is_ in fact Spike Lee. Heheh ... Shari actually thought it was a _woman_ at first because he was all hunched over (trying to be inconspicuous I guess).

It seemed like a very New York moment ... sitting next to Spike Lee in La Guardia, waiting for a flight to Puerto Rico. Too bad we weren't eating bagels & lox for breakfast!

Adjusting

So, here's something I'd like to hear from you guys on ...

What are the biggest adjustments one has to make when moving from LA to NY? How about when one moves from NY to LA?

And I'm not talking about just obvious things like "you have to buy/sell a car." I guess I'm interested more in social differences, such as how people meet, interact, and network. Or, maybe what type of expenditures are really different (but again, not necessarily obvious).

One thing that has really caught me by surprise is just how focused NY night life is on drinking at bars. I've really had to reign in my spending on booze at bars since moving here.

Or another thing ... what NY beaches will the typical SoCal person find most appealing? Or, what LA neighborhoods will feel homiest to a New Yorker?

just got back to hollywood after a visit to ny/nj....it's so strange how many miles lay between this land and that and in a matter of hours on a plane....bam you're there again

six years in the west village gave me friends from all over the world that i still have strong bonds with since leaving ny in 2000.
that year seemed to bring on a mass exodus of sorts, so many people were leaving due to the rents going thru the roof
i became disenchanted in my love affair with this city
times square sold to disney, no dancing signs in bars

sometimes i wake up in hollywood and am startled that i don't live in ny anymore....as i'm sure many of you transplants do

but i do love it here...strange atmosphere yet somehow more in touch with nature....enjoying the natural structures in my field of sight as opposed to always being man made

any thoughts?

So, clearly this isn't just an LA-NY thing, but I just wanted to share how bizarre I think it is that I keep running into people I knew in LA who have since moved here. Its such a small world.

The one big benefit of this is that my NY social circle keeps growing without actually having to meet new people =) Heehee.

Any of you have any advice on how to make a cross country move go smoother? How about some leads on cheap ways to have large stuff shipped?

Thought this might be useful ...

Hey people -

I thought that maybe over time this tribe might become a useful place for those of us who bounce back and forth a lot to keep in contact with each other, post good airline deals, etc. Plus, I haven't started any tribes yet and was feeling left out =)

Hi everyone! Hey this is a great tribe. Perfect for me. Home's in LA, but I spend more time in NYC now for school. Jetblue was having cheap $99 one way plane tickets to and from NY and LA a month ago. Hope all are well. =)
